Naturalization Records are very important to your genealogical research but are often overlooked. They can help you find the date of immigration, ship's passenger list, port of arrival, and the place of birth for your ancestor.
How much information is found on them will depend on when the naturalization was done. The naturalization process did not have to happen in one court, or in one lcation. It was not mandatory and not all aliens became citizens, and not all completed the process once they started it.
We all want to know where our ancestors came from. We want to know when they arrived in North America and when they became citizens. Naturalization and immigration records are the answer. They Became Americans sums up their genealogical value best: "... [Naturalization records] assume importance as a link to the past, and sometimes represent the only way to discover the Old World origins of an individual or family" [1]
Olive Tree Genealogy specializes in Ships Passenger Lists, but the topic of Naturalization Records wasn't given much space. Nor have I found any websites devoted to this fascinating area of family research! With that in mind, I decided it was time to create a new website, one devoted to Naturalization Records - what they are, where they are, and what can be found in them. It's been a fascinating adventure learning about these records, and I hope I have given the genealogical community a website that will help find your immigrant ancestor.
